I generally find that the Alpha fiend is too expensive and too large to be played easily. Its base stats are fairly tanky, but its damage is lacking, and although this unit can scale it generally takes a very long time to ramp up to an impressive amount of damage. That said, if it has an incredibly sturdy tank in front of it, this unit can end up racking up a lot of damage in the relentless phase. Because the increased attack only triggers on strike, if this unit doesn't attack anything then it won't scale. For this reason, it is generally a bad idea to throw this on the top floor out of harm's way and expect it to do high damage. This also means that even if you are able to remove an enemy using a spell, you should consider whether it would be better to leave it alive in order to let your Alpha Fiend strike. When upgrading this, prioritise multistrike, as it allows the Alpha Fiend to scale twice as quickly. Although this unit is generally underwhelming, it has a few good candidates for its essence, particularly multistrike units such as the Animus of Will and the Eel Gorgon.
